The Path of a Man

He tore his clothes off, he screamed, he cried, and he drank his pain away, then he laughed out of bitterness. He left everything that hurt him and all the things he loved behind, for him the difference between existence and demise is unrecognized, all he longed for was freedom, an unknown freedom, a freedom that knows no fate.

It mattered not how long or short the path was, he decided to follow no footsteps of others, he was determined to know where does his reckless soul live, to wander in the unknown, followed by his barefoot footprints, guided by the stars and led by the glowing moonlight. He walked for many days in the cold of the nights, and he sheltered himself under the trees every morning until the sunset, so the burning sun wouldn’t annihilate his thin body, which was refreshed by the rivers, and the fields of fruit that he passed through. He didn’t have a goal but to run away from the cruelty of the world that he had witnessed, and the sorrow that had conquered his spirit, and to preserve the pieces of his bitter love, the most sacred treasure that he carried through the years, which he buried in his heart, where no one could ever breach.

He walked until he reached a beautiful piece of land. Although it was abandoned, white roses surrounded his heavy soul with tranquility and a scent of peace, and the soft breeze of wind played with his scattered hair and gently touched his aching body. He finally breathed a sigh of relief, as he lied down on the grass and raised his head up to the sky, and smiled. Thinking to himself, he made it, he couldn’t believe his own eyes, he couldn’t believe that he really did escape the noisy sounds, the daily routine, the artificial smiles that used to ruin his days, the loud laughter of whores that used to darken his nights, the luxury villas and the huts, the celebrations and demonstrations, the exaggerated weddings and funerals, he escaped everything that greed has created, he escaped the selfish and materialistic human that his fate forced him to tolerate, the fate that he did not accept, everything he succeeded to escape made his eyes sparkle while staring at the sky, and made his smile grow wider, a real smile.

Suddenly gray clouds filled the sky, and lighting bolts nailed the grounds accompanied with the roar of thunder, the poor man did not expect to encounter the rage of mother nature, he shouted in pain and cursed the gods for ruining the most peaceful moment he had during his lifetime, then scary silence prevailed, and a dreadful creature emerged in front of the man who started to shiver in fear, and uttered in a tremulous voice, “Who are you? What do you want from me?”

The dreadful creature answered: “I am the fate you have rejected, and the hope you have neglected. I am the bitterness within your sweet moments, and the peace through your most difficult times. I am the light in your dark path, and the ugly scar which makes that path unforgettable.
I am the world that drove you insane, and all the tears that you shed in vain. I am all the things you have lost in life and the life you have lived for one thing you lost.
Now go back to where you came from, and finish what you have started, or this miserable life of yours will finally have an end”

No! Shouted the man who suddenly was filled with anger: “I will stick to the path I have chosen, this is where my soul has known peace. My loneliness makes no difference as long as I carry this love wherever I go, in this broken heart of mine.
Take my life away, as now my soul can rest in peace, and not in anguish and sorrow due to that trivial ceremony that is so called funeral. Spill my blood so it can quench the thirst of these beautiful white flowers, and every flower will get a drop until I am out of it, rip my heart out of my chest so I can feed it to the worms of this sacred soil which will finally raise red flowers with the smell of my forsaken love and my forgotten memories that my heart had carried all the way down here, and then throw me under that apple tree, where with time my dead body will merge with its roots, and it will bloom evermore.”
