…Typical Lebanese Conversation!!(1)

..This conversation took place in a Lebanese cafe, two friends in highschool confused about their future majors, careers, and lives….

Tracy:”..Have you chosen one?”

Amy:”Well, I’ve chosen many, but most of them are found in very expensive universities. My parents can’t afford this amount of money.”

Tracy:”I know, our country is complex. The cheap university(they say),is based on political groups:S.”

Amy:”What would we do?”

Tracy:”We’ll go to that one, what do you think?”

Amy:”I wanted to study music, you know I like to be a guitarist, but mom told me to do something that gives me a living.”

Tracy:”Did you ever think of emigrating?…I mean everyone’s doing it now.”

Amy:”Hehe,..thought of, but I could never do such a thing. I will never leave my country to live elsewhere. What about you?”

Tracy:”Well, I found an excellent Art school in Sweden. I think that I’ll go there. What is there to live for in this country?”

Amy:”Well, there’s always something and someone to live for.Even if there wasn’t, Lebanon is still our country.”

Tracy:”…[laughs sarcastically...]..I’ve heard this a million times already…What is my country offering me?Why would I offer it my talents and helping hand if it never does anything good to me?”

Amy:”…I agree with what you’re saying, but Lebanon needs us.It’s our homeland, where we belong, our childhood memories, friends…most of what we have is here.”

Tracy:”Ok, let’s say I majored in theater.What will I work?…Although there’s a very tiny percentage of finding a job, let’s assume that I found one…How much will I get paid?”

Amy:”It depends on your talent and who you’re working with, but nothing is impossible, unless you make it seem so.”

Tracy:”Hehehe…What are you talking about?we live in Lebanon…There’s no place for talents here. It’s all about WASTA and GIVE ME A COUPLE OF THOUSAND DOLLARS,YOU’LL BECOME WHATEVER!”

Amy:”You do your best, and we’ll see what will happen next.I’m sure that if we work hard, we’ll accomplish all our goals.”

Tracy:”Artists don’t have SOCIAL ASSURANCE[Daman Ijtima3i] in Lebanon…See?Even in sickness, people are categorized…”

Amy:”I’m going to study in the Lebanese University.Working hard always makes successful people.”

Tracy:”Cool dreamer!,I’m going to Sweden.”

Amy:”When we meet in a years time, we’ll see who has a better life. Not that we’re comparing, but the Lebanese wins in his country, not in other countries.”
